What will you see?

A LEGO® artwork unlike anything you’ve encountered before. Ekow Nimako has built a futuristic landscape along the Nile River. From Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea unfolds a vision of Africa that is thriving and without boundaries.

The sculpture measures nearly seven meters in length and is made of over one million black LEGO® bricks. Monumental, visionary, and above all: a tribute to the power of imagination. The dramatic presentation heightens the sense of wonder and opens space for a future in which African civilizations take center stage, free from colonial interruption.

Who is Ekow Nimako?

Ekow Nimako is a Ghanaian-Canadian artist and one of the leading voices in Afrofuturism. With thousands of black LEGO® bricks, he creates sculptures that are both futuristic and spiritual. His work has been shown in Toronto, New York, Paris, and Seoul. Now, for the first time, he comes to the Netherlands for this new exhibition at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam.

Nimako’s art challenges us to look differently: beyond the canon, beyond dominant narratives. In doing so, he opens the door to greater awareness of how past, present, and future remain deeply connected.

In the interactive gallery, tens of thousands of LEGO® bricks are waiting. Build a bridge, a tower, or a dream house, and add your creation to a collective structure that evolves every day. 

In this space, you’ll experience what it means to dream and imagine together — and to realize that the future is not fixed, but something we can build collectively.

First, explore Nimako’s impressive sculpture, then create something of your own with LEGO®. Every piece built becomes part of a growing structure shaped by visitors together. What is Afrofuturism?

Afrofuturism is a creative movement where art, technology, and mythology converge. It tells new stories in which Black civilizations are not at the margins, but at the center. It is a way of thinking where justice and imagination go hand in hand. 

With The Nile 3025 CE, Nimako envisions a hopeful future where African voices and stories are central. It is a monument in LEGO®, but above all an invitation to broaden your perspective and imagine new worlds.
