Much to do with bamboo: summer activity 

Looking for a fun activity to do with the kids in Amsterdam this summer? At Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, you can immerse yourself in a world of bamboo for eight weeks. Visit the workshop in the heart of the museum. Build, decorate, weave, wave, bend, chill out in the bamboo tower and expand your knowledge with facts and myths; suitable for everyone aged 6 and over. Free with your museum ticket.

Practical info

This summer, the monumental Lichthal will transform into a bustling makerspace for eight weeks. Join daily activities and workshops, or join masterclasses with artists on Wednesday afternoons.

Fan of bamboo

This summer, decorate your own bamboo fan at Wereldmuseum! The Wereldmuseum collection features hundreds of examples.  What would you like to express? How does the bamboo fan match your outfit, style, or mood? Which decorations will you choose? 

  • 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM  

  • €2 to purchase the fan at the shop  

  • Feel free to join us if there’s a spot available  

  • Wear old clothes, because you will be working with Ecoline

Building with bamboo: create your own dream home

Sustainable, flexible, and full of possibilities. Join us and use various construction techniques to build your dream bamboo house to scale—from a tiny house to a castle!

If you’re looking for inspiration, take a seat in front of the big screen in the middle of the Lichthal. Learn about various bamboo myths and facts and admire the most beautiful bamboo creations in this lighthearted and educational film.

Masterclass: Bamboo on the Ball

Creating round shapes with bamboo? It’s definitely possible! During this surprising masterclass, you’ll discover just how versatile bamboo really is. Together with bamboo builders and architects BambooBuilds and Studio Akeka, you’ll build a giant bamboo ball that can actually roll.

Masterclass: Bamboo lamp

From Asia to South America, bamboo lamps have illuminated evenings across the world. In this masterclass, you will work together with artist Karin Iturralde to design and make your own bamboo lamp. Expect a creative, hands-on workshop filled with experimentation and making — perfect for curious makers and families.

Masterclass: Bamboo Leo Mask

Did you know that the head of a traditional lion mask is often made of bamboo? That makes it light, flexible, and perfect for moving gracefully while dancing. In this masterclass, artist Hoi Shan Mak will show you how to make your own powerful animal mask. Will you choose a lion, or will you create your own fantasy animal?
