Workshop: Making ice stars

What Christmas traditions does your family have? And how do people decorate their homes during Christmas in other countries? Straw is one of the natural materials that were used in the past to make all kinds of utensils, such as baskets. After the harvest and in winter, straw decorations were made in many places around the world. In Mexico, people made Nacimiento, the nativity scene with figurines, or decorated their home altars with Christmas angels. In Scandinavian countries, such as Finland, people make Julbocken, the Christmas goat. In Germany, people made ice crystals and stars for the Christmas tree. Learn how to make ice stars this winter at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam.

Create your own art with LEGO®

Did you know that you can create your own art with LEGO®? Come to Wereldmuseum Amsterdam and take part in the LEGO® printing workshop. Inspired by the work of Ekow Nimako, an artist who built a landscape of the future using more than a million black LEGO® bricks, you can make your own print of the future! Work on your own future vision during the Christmas holidays. Instead of stacking them, this printing technique involves placing each LEGO® brick on the same level. You come up with your own design and print it. Layers can also be printed on top of each other, creating new shapes. What do you see in the city of the future? Smart buildings, crazy inventions, dancing bridges, or robot trees? Will you join us?

For whom: ages 6+, When: daily, Time: 12:00-4:00 p.m., join in if there is space, walk-ins welcome until 3:30 p.m., Location: Building Black Civilizations – The Nile 3025, Price: free with a museum ticket

Raad van de Raaf. Hands-on exhibition for climate heroes!

What's going on at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam? Feathers are everywhere and you can hear the sound of melting ice. In Raad van de Raaf, you will meet Raymi from the Netherlands and Ivalu from Greenland. They are members of Raad van de Raaf, a club of children who are working together to support the environment. Raymi and Ivalu introduce you to people from Greenland, Peru, Morocco, and Bangladesh, who show you how they live with climate change. How do they adapt, and how resilient are you? The new children's exhibition offers lots of activities for children. Test your balance in hunter Lars' kayak, hop on Greenlandic Malik's dog sled, listen to the sound of melting ice caps, and gather ideas for a better world.
