Dive into the history of the disco scene

DISCO transformed Amsterdam's nightlife, creating new spaces where people could express themselves, connect, and celebrate who they were.
But how did it all begin? What did Amsterdam sound like when the first disco records arrived from New York? Which communities and pioneers were leading the way when disco found its way from New York and other cities to Amsterdam? And what remains of those nights filled with glitter, freedom, and unapologetic dancing?

Rooted in queer clubs, Black communities, and underground scenes, disco grew into a global movement whose influence can still be felt in house music, ballroom culture, and contemporary club culture. During this ADE Arts & Culture Special, we explore the history of the disco scene and the birth of the DJ era. From pioneers and tastemakers to venues such as Vrijhaven and today's festivals, we trace the journey from disco to house and ask: does that energy still live on? Do we still dare to surrender to the freedom, self-expression, and collective spirit of the dancefloor?

Expect stories, music, and fresh perspectives. We honour the past, question the present, and celebrate everything in between. Featuring Jean Paul Paula, Amber Vineyard (host), Eddy de Clercq, Sunny Jansen, Suze Ijó, Thijs Weijland, Manique Hendricks, Juno Dijkshoorn, Shirley Hart and Anydee Anytime.
