What is Wereldmuseum Junior?

Wereldmuseum Junior is Wereldmuseum's offering for families and children up to the age of 12. Explore real stories, artefacts and perspectives from all over the world. By hands-on activities, personal experiences and making connections, you’ll learn more about culture, identity and living together.

Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is an interactive museum for children and families. Here you can enjoy a fun and inspiring day out in Amsterdam together. Whether you participate in a creative workshop, listen to a story, or learn to cook yourself: at Wereldmuseum you learn together by doing.

Especially for families, there is the unique Junior exhibition – Raad van de Raaf! Here, children are not only allowed to look, but also to touch, try things out, and participate. This brings the world to life in a way that stimulates your senses and makes you curious.

Our party shop is a cheery, family venue where you can find things from all over the world that are used in all kinds of different celebrations. Every day somewhere in the world, something is being celebrated. We don’t all share the same celebrations, but we all like a party. Take a look around in our party shop and discover celebrations you didn’t know existed.

Raad van de Raaf (6+)

The interactive exhibition for climate heroes! There are lots of activities in the children's exhibition. Test your balance in hunter Lars' kayak, step onto Greenlandic Malik's dog sled, listen to the sound of melting ice caps, and gather ideas for a better world. For everyone aged 6 and up!

Boxie (6+)

Fancy a playful and unique tour of the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam? Set off with Boxie, available to borrow free of charge from the museum shop. You will receive a set of 10 cards, each featuring a special object from one of the exhibitions. Every object has a story and a task to discuss or carry out together. Find the object, listen, look carefully, and get started!

Celebrate your birthday at the museum (5+)

Is your birthday coming up soon? Invite all your friends to your children's party at the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. How fun is that? You can choose from different themes for children between the ages of 5 and 12. You get access to the museum for the whole day, a special birthday program, and of course a gift for the birthday boy or girl!

Fun and educational world activities for at home and at school. The museum is a treasure trove of human creativity. If you look closely at the collection, you'll feel inspired to make something yourself. Join in our World Activities at home and at school: make a love letter or a family pendant. Practice weaving patterns or experiment with paper cutting.

Every Sunday is a celebration

Not everyone celebrates the same holidays, but we all celebrate! At the Wereldmuseum, we put a different celebration in the spotlight every Sunday and offer free activities. Discover a celebration you didn't know about or celebrate a holiday that is important to you together with other visitors. For everyone aged 6 and up!

The history of Wereldmuseum Junior

Wereldmuseum Junior builds on the rich legacy of Tropenmuseum Junior, founded in 1975. Generations of children were introduced to the world here through interactive exhibitions centred on hands-on experiences, exploration and multidisciplinary activities. The concept grew to become a national and international model for museums; for many years, its unique approach attracted museum and education professionals from both the Netherlands and abroad.

Today, Wereldmuseum Junior is much more than a children's museum. It is Wereldmuseum’s combined offering for children and families across all its museum sites: exhibitions, public programmes, holiday activities, workshops, special tours, interactive displays and educational games.

We also offer school programs. For example, bring your entire class for an interactive and educational program. Or check out the interactive online teaching packages. The lessons can be done as a class, but students can also participate individually on their own devices.
