In Nieuw-Guinea zijn kralen van grote waarde en betekenis omdat tastbare getuigen zijn van eeuwenoude ruilnetwerken met de Molukken en zelfs China en Vietnam. Kralen worden verwerkt in ceremoniële voorwerpen. Dit soort schorten werd door mannen en vrouwen gedragen tijdens ceremoniële dansen.
