Mecca is connected to two of the Five Pillars of Islam, the five fundamental acts of worship: the daily prayers, which are performed facing Mecca, and the pilgrimage.
The Rituals of Hajj
The tawaf is the most widely recognised ritual of Hajj. It is one of the most important moments of both Hajj and Umrah, when thousands of pilgrims walk in worship around the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque seven times, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad. Pilgrims circle the sanctuary counterclockwise, beginning at the Black Stone.
Mecca represents a spiritual ideal: the place that Muslims should visit at least once in their lifetime, if they are physically able and can afford the journey. Hajj connects believers from around the world. It is also a moment to reflect on and take stock of one’s life.
Pilgrims can only perform Hajj between the eighth and thirteenth days of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. At other times of the year, they can undertake the minor pilgrimage, Umrah.
The rituals of Umrah take place only in Mecca, including the circumambulation of the Kaaba (tawaf), walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa, and drinking water from the Zamzam Well.
